July 25, 2001: Gas tank and Driveshaft

  • Short update... I've been traveling, and getting ready to do a lot more for work, so I'm TRYING to make some car progress! :)
  • When we last left our hero, he was struggling to hang a gas tank with a set of straps that were too short... Rock Valley did make me a new set and sent them out, and tonight I finally installed them. I hit the length pretty much dead on! :-) 33", in case any of you ever need a set...

So, I connected the straps at the front/floorboard. I had requested Rock Valley to make the loop a little longer than the first set, and this REALLY helped in connecting the strap to the floor. But since they were so long, they were a pain. I then manhandled that behometh roughly into place and on the jack stands again. Phew! Time for a break! :)

Then came the straps. These things are made of stainless also, and as such, they don't like to bend very much. Hmph... After much pushing, pulling, bending, and cursing, I had the first one barely started on the bolt. The next fun was getting the nut started. Since the straps don't have much give at all to them, it took two LARGE screwdrivers and me trying to make three arms out of two to make it all work. I finally got the nut started, then had to literally hammer the deep-well socket onto the nut to wedge it in place. But it finally went, and I did the same to the other side, and the tank is in place! :) WOO HOO!

  • After the tank was tightened up, I pulled my new Denny's Driveshaft out of the box and stuck it in place. What a new piece! I'll put up a picture soon, but suffice it to say that I was impressed! :) It fit perfectly, and I now have a complete driveline installed! :) Progress...
  • Upcoming this weekend, I will be painting all of the final pieces (hood, one fender, rear spoiler, and RS urethane nose) red. That will be a great feeling! :) I'm also going to head back to those pesky side windows (now that I have 2 with mounting holes in them, ugh!) and see if I can get all that working...
