Vintage Air Evaporator Install

This page documents my install of the new Vintage Air Gen II (all electric, no vacuum operation) Compact Evaporator under the dash of the 1970 Camaro. It's a TIGHT fit, and it's not an ideal fit, but it will work! :)

There she is... The Vintage Air Gen II Compact Unit. Somehow, I'm going to stuff this puppy up under my dash without cutting/bending anything... I hope!

Before hanging the unit, I needed to install the bulkhead which will allow the connections to the compressor/condensor and the heater hoses.. You can see the blukhead in this picture, with the interior hoses attached.

How painful was this??? All that work on the firewall, just to go cut a hole in it??? Ouch!

PHEW! That looks a little better! :) Bulkhead installed on the firewall...

And inside before the evaporator goes into place... Talk about a tight fit!

With the bulkhead taken care of, it's time to hang the evaporator. Rather than weld anything, I decided to drill two small holes in the cowl area and use bolts to install the brackets. That way I can easily remove things if need be...

In this one, you can see how close the bulkhead is to the evaporator! Need some small hand to work in there (and I don't have 'em!!!!).

Now that the evaporator was hung, I had to install the defroster ducts. I purchased the pair of ducts from Vintage Air. They are from the 69 Camaro kit. I think they screwed up and sent me two of the same ones, rather than one of each side though. However, I think everything is gonna be ok... The left duct flex pipe MAY be in the way, but I'll find a way to work around it if I have to...

Here's the final install pic, before the dash pad goes into place... This is a good shot of the tight hose routing. I'm going to have to install the heater water valve in the engine compartment somewhere... Not quite sure where yet though...
