This page documents my install of the new Vintage Air Gen II (all electric, no vacuum operation) Compact Evaporator under the dash of the 1970 Camaro. It's a TIGHT fit, and it's not an ideal fit, but it will work! :) There she is... The Vintage Air Gen II Compact Unit. Somehow, I'm going to stuff this puppy up under my dash without cutting/bending anything... I hope! ![]() Before hanging the unit, I needed to install the bulkhead which will allow the connections to the compressor/condensor and the heater hoses.. You can see the blukhead in this picture, with the interior hoses attached. ![]() How painful was this??? All that work on the firewall, just to go cut a hole in it??? Ouch! ![]() PHEW! That looks a little better! :) Bulkhead installed on the firewall... ![]() And inside before the evaporator goes into place... Talk about a tight fit! ![]() With the bulkhead taken care of, it's time to hang the evaporator. Rather than weld anything, I decided to drill two small holes in the cowl area and use bolts to install the brackets. That way I can easily remove things if need be... ![]() In this one, you can see how close the bulkhead is to the evaporator! Need some small hand to work in there (and I don't have 'em!!!!). ![]() Now that the evaporator was hung, I had to install the defroster ducts. I purchased the pair of ducts from Vintage Air. They are from the 69 Camaro kit. I think they screwed up and sent me two of the same ones, rather than one of each side though. However, I think everything is gonna be ok... The left duct flex pipe MAY be in the way, but I'll find a way to work around it if I have to... ![]() Here's the final install pic, before the dash pad goes into place... This is a good shot of the tight hose routing. I'm going to have to install the heater water valve in the engine compartment somewhere... Not quite sure where yet though... ![]() |
